In his study the author gives a broad picture, spanning over two centuries, of a typical, metropolitan, successful, yet adversities stricken Jewish family, the Engel Family whose members’ significant contributions to the Hungarian culture is beyond doubts. Adolf Engel, born in the town of Pecs in the 19th century, and his descendants worked and are still working hard all over the world, creating lots of values for the benefit of all. Their story reflects the typical fate of the Jews of Hungary: a virtual integration into the society in the 19th century, and forced segregation and uprooting from their birthplace and, in some cases, from their religious communities in the 20th century.
