Wine production is first mentioned in Noah’s story in the Torah. In the period of the Jewish Patriarch wine was a well-known beverage, and it was also used for sacred purposes, as part of sacrifices to the Almighty. Wine was called the “blood of grapes” which shows that it was the red wine that was produced mostly in this period. Wine has been the part of the most festive Jewish religious occasions since biblical times until the present days. However, wine is considered to be not only the source of joy but also a “dangerous drink” that has to be consumed carefully. The Talmud warns us to avoid wine glasses if we want to keep secrets: the Hebrew word for wine (יין) has the same numerological value as the Hebrew word for secret (סוד), that is 70.
